This was may artist statement at the end of last year:
"I work with photographs and scratch board because I love being able to so detail and emphasis with out color. Before this year, I hated painting. However, now, after one semester of IB art, I love it and am realizing what color can do to the mood and feel of artwork. I also used to follow an artist I admire such as Chagall or my teachers style rather than working on my own. but now, throughout this course, I am developing my own ways of painting and drawing. I would like to grow in other fields such as ceramics and water colors as well as acrylic painting. My goal for this course is to build up my skills as an artist so that I may pursue graphic advertising or design in college.I am interested in photography and graphics such as scratch board and painting. Since we are currently focusing on painting, I am trying to improve on my blending colors and making the outline of my objects less fuzzy and more defined. I like the method of putting the complimentary color down before the color that it will actually be because I think that it makes the painting look more dreamy, energetic, or sad depending on the colors used. When two compliments are placed side by side it makes them pop out at the viewer so that is also why I use this technique. I did not know any art terms, how to paint, or anything about artists at the beginning of this class, but now I know what colors look good together, and how to make things stand out.My big idea, mood, is reflected in my work by the colors I use. I also tend to choose photos to paint from that communicate a specific mood. For instance, the tooth bottle shows nostalgia, the Lichtenstein shows sadness, and the abstract shows excitement and imagination. I know that it is possible to communicate mood through more than just expressions and body language now, and hope to explore the other means as well."
My ideas have progressed since I wrote this on March 1, 2010 in a great number of ways. The statement above is merely a revision of the artist statement that I wrote on the first day of IB Art, and I can honestly say that I have not thought about an artist statement since. I would leave everything as it is, but now I have a stronger understanding of skills, issues, and ways to express moods through my art. My writing skills are much much better now as well.
